Ayurveda treatment Pizhichil is a combination of oil massage and heat treatment. A gentle, synchronized massage of up and down is carried out on all parts of the body other than the head are subjected to this treatment. The patient should lay on the treatment table and two to four trained therapists perform the massage under the supervision of a physician. It is administered in seven standard positions, so that no area oft he body is left uncovered.
Here, cloth dipped in warm medicated oil is squeezed over the patient’s body uniformly and then the oil rubbed smoothly over the body of the patient by masseurs on either side. This process may take 1 hour including continuous oil pouring over the body, then rubbing and stimulating the skin using hands and special cotton cloths. Special caution has to be taken for the patient’s head should not get sweat during the treatment. A cloth is tied over the forehead of the therapy taker to prevent oil from getting into the eyes.Duration of Pizhichil is decided by the Ayurveda expert after the body constitution of the individual has been determined. Normally the treatment may last 14 to 28 days.

The body is massaged with small linen paultices (kizhi) filled with Navara rice, which is cooked in cows milk and a specific ayurvedic herbal mixture. These poultices are dipped in the same mixture and applied over the whole body. The poultices are maintained at a medium temperature. After wipping the body with a dry towel, the medicated oil is applied again. The normal duration for this therapy is 14 to 21 days. The word Shirodhara came from Sanskrit language. Shiro means pertains to head and Dhara means to flow. Sirovasthi is an effective treatment in Ayurveda for nervous system disorders. It is the term applied to the process of allowing warm herbal oils on the head for a specific period of time. A bandage is tied around the patient’s head and an open-headed cap is secured. Then, medicated oil is warmed to the body temperature, poured into this cap and allowed to soak into the scalp.
The primary step of Sirovasthi starts with the application of warm medicated oil which is an amalgam of gingerly oil, castor oil, milk, ghee and other herb extracts. It helps to nourish the nerve ends and prepares the body for the main treatment. Then, a cylindrical shaped leather cap of over ten inches length with both ends open is fitted around the head of the patient. Certain amount of different blended herbal oils is then poured on the patient’s head. This oil is retained on the head for around 30 to 45 minutes as per an individual’s body type. During this treatment, the healing properties of the medicated oil act on the brain and tune the central and autonomous nervous system. The patient’s brain, peripheral nerves and spinal cord receives the medicinal effects of this oil. Consequently, several nerve disorders get restored and the mind gets relief from stress. The complete duration of the treatment varies as per the patient’s condition and type of disease.
Sirovasthi treatment is recommended for facial paralysis, dryness of nostrils, mouth and throat, itching on the head, eye problems, memory loss, burning sensation of head, insomnia, disease of cranial nerves and hair fall. It is also used to treat nervous disorders like hemiplegia, quadriplegia and eye diseases due to weak nerves, spondylitis, and certain other skin disorders of the head.

Use of powder made of herbs in body massage is called Udvartana (ayurvedic powder massage & spelled as Udwarthanam and Udvarthanam). Nasya karma is the best procedure for treating Sirorogas (diseases affecting the head area) like migraine, chronic headaches, sinusitis, ear, nose and throat disorders. This involves the purification of the head region of the patient. In this process, the imbalanced doshas above the neck are removed through the nasal openings.
